Rainwater Catchment System - A rainwater catchment system, installed by Wisconsin-based Herr Environmental and Dave Jones Plumbing, collects, filters, stores, and delivers rainwater for landscape irrigation. Rainwater is diverted from the roof, filtered and then stored in an underground holding tank next to the home. A pump draws water as necessary for landscape irrigation, and other exterior uses. The irrigation system is fully approved by the EPA’s WaterSense program, ensuring that the design and application is high efficiency. Also, drip lines, which are buried just below the soil, will be sued for irrigation purposes. Based on the size of the Wisconsin Trend Home™, approximately 43,000 gallons of water per year will be able to be recovered and used for irrigation, thereby greatly lessening this home’s consumption, and recharging the aquifer in the process.

High-Efficiency Fixtures - Wisconsin-based Kohler is providing water-conserving plumbing fixtures that allow for a comfortable flow while minimizing the water used in toilets, showers and faucets. Toilets use 20 to 30 percent less water than conventional toilets and efficient fixtures will reduce water consumption by 40 to 80 percent.

Grey Water - Water recovered from the master shower (“grey water”) will be filtered, stored in the basement, and then reutilized in the master bath toilet. The reuse of this water will allow for a savings of close to 12,000 gallons of water every year. The selected system for the home is from the Hallett series manufactured by UV Pure Technologies, Inc. The Hallett 15 system is one of the most effective and cost-efficient grey water systems available. It is not only approved by the State of Wisconsin but is also NSF/ANSI 55 Class A Certified. Depending on the water quality coming into the system, the flow of the water can be adjusted to ensure that it's getting an adequate amount of time in front of the UV lights. To ensure that the water in the storage tank does not form bacteria, it will be recirculated through the Hallett 15 system approximately every 6 hours. Before the water leaves the tank for its final destination at the toilet, it will be filtered through the Hallett 15 system one last time. The Hallett 15 system uses approximately the same amount of energy as a 100 watt light bulb and the only required maintenance is the annual changing of the (2) UV-lights that can easily be changed by the homeowner and the testing of a RP valve done by a certified technician. The Hallett 15 system has two sensors that consistently monitor the water quality. If the water quality ever goes below a predetermined level, an alarm will sound informing the homeowner that there is a problem. While the Hallett 15 system is being serviced, there is a bypass that can be activated to ensure that the homeowner can still have access to water.

Hot Water Conservation - A point-of-use model was subsequently developed to simulate a hot water system having multiple demand heaters distributed at the outlets and served by a tree-type supply piping (cold only). Since the heaters are located at the outlets, lower delivery temperatures are required. Using the point-of-use model, simulations show that the system efficiencies are nearly 100% and annual energy consumption can be reduced by almost 50% for the low-use home and 28% for the high-use home over a storage-tank water heater with a tree-type distribution system.

WaterSense Plumbing - Wisconsin-based Kohler has partnered with WaterSense, a program sponsored by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency which seeks to protect our nation's water supply by promoting water efficiency and enhancing the market for water-efficient products, programs, and practices. WaterSense labeled toilets use at least 20% less water than standard 1.6-gallon toilets while still meeting strict flushing performance guidelines. Kohler’s efficient faucets can reduce water consumption by 40 to 80 percent. The low-flow aerator options add air to water flow, reducing the amount of water released from the faucet. Automatic shut-off options are available with some faucets so water runs only when the faucet is in use. Highly accurate activation sensors conserve water by keeping false activations to a minimum.

Water Efficient Appliances - New technology makes appliances more water efficient than ever. The Energy Star program endorses a variety of appliances, including dishwashers and clothes washers, which optimize water usage for a given task. These appliances have the capabilities to outperform standard appliances by up to 85 percent, when measuring both energy and water usage.
Water Filtration - Guthrie & Frey will be installing a water filtration system that will be used to address local water quality concerns and reduce chlorine, lead, chromium, radium, and odor – amount other potential contaminants – in water used for cooking drinking, and showering. The Hellenbrand designed and engineered the ProMate 6.0 which will be able to provide brine recovery. This complements the savvy consumer who is concerned with chloride discharge impacting the environment and also looking to reduce their operating costs for salt - which is the fuel needed to run your water treatment.

Energy Efficient Water Heater - The Phoenix Solar water heater is truly a revolutionary product. It is designed with an internal solar heat exchanger for a solar panel that combines with a highly efficient 97% gas fired back-up heat exchanger all in one storage tank. The water heater will transfer all the energy the sun can provide and also provide lots of hot water through the internal gas fired back-up when the sun is not shining. Designed with the most advanced technology available, with a 97% efficiency, this product will optimize efficiency and operating reliability.
