Home Orientation - In determining the orientation for the house, several considerations were used - all of which were for the goal of providing the most environmentally friendly house possible.  The home has been situated on the lot in a manner that the solarium maximizes its ability to take advantage of passive solar techniques.  Utilizing passive solar helps to warm the home in winter months, but restrict the sun’s exposure during the hot summer months in the solarium.  Additionally, solar orientation is important for the proper location of the panel’s efficiency in creating energy. Lastly, the manner in which the home is situated on the lot helps to minimize, along with proper landscaping, the amount of stormwater flowing offsite.

Stormwater Management
- On this project, stormwater management will have a focus both during construction, as well as post-construction.  After construction of the house, stormwater runoff will be diverted into rain gardens and other drought resistant landscaping. Water that would otherwise be channeled entirely from the local watershed stays on site to filter through the ground and recharge the local aquifer.  Additionally, permeable pavement will be used to aid in the collection of stormwater.  The goal is for the post-construction hydrology to mimic pre-construction conditions as closely as possible, to minimize the undesirable effects of stormwater runoff - such as stream bank erosion, surface water body pollution and localized flooding, and to maximize, to the extent practical, the site’s ability to recharge the aquifer.

Erosion Control
- During construction, biodegradable silt socks will be supplied by White Oak Farms to ensure that stormwater is retained on the property.  Special consideration was made during the development of this site to minimize runoff, as a close by cold water stream mandated protection from dangerous warm water runoff.

Reduced Building Footprint
- Designers for this home made the footprint a major consideration, as a way to limit stormwater runoff and other negative impacts on the environment.  The Wisconsin Trend Home’s™ square footage is less than 2,100 ft.2, which is significantly lower than the average size of 2,681 ft.2 for new construction in that area.
