Indoor Air Quality

Air Testing - In order for the Wisconsin Trend Home™ to comply with the Energy Star requirements, a significant amount of testing will take place on the indoor air quality.  In addition to pre-construction consulting and analysis, a number of additional tests will be completed as construction progress is made.  First, there is performance testing, which consists of a thorough testing of the mechanical systems and building shell. The HVAC airflow testing is extremely valuable to address comfort concerns before they happen. Next, there is a blower door test, which determines whether there are air leaks, and, if so, to locate air leakage locations throughout the home. Next, infrared scanning is used both by itself, and in conjunction with the blower door test, which allows the testers to locate cold spots and air leakage points or insulation flaws in hidden locations, for example interior chases or inaccessible areas of an attic.  Lastly, there is ventilation system testing, which confirms that the home’s ventilation equipment meets the Standards 1AQ and 2AQ of the program.  Airflows from ventilation equipment can be a large factor in the home’s ability to expel moisture/odors from the home.

Supply Air Filtering
- Fine air filters in the home’s ventilation system capture most contaminants to achieve an exceptional level of indoor air quality.  The (type) air filters have 80 percent or better filtration efficiency on 1-3 micron particles and greater than 90 percent   York’s HEPA, Electronic and Media Air Cleaners help to ensure that the home’s air is clear of dust, pollen, fungi, smoke and other. These cleaners provide stepped-up filtration, more effective than your furnace or air conditioner alone. In fact, these cleaners can remove up to 94 percent of the particles that pass through your home’s system.

Radon Mitigation System
- A passive radon mitigation system enables any potential radon gases to escape from the basement.  The mitigation system consists of a three-inch plastic PVC pipe that protrudes from the basement slab.  Radon follows the path of least resistance and will vent through the slab substrate into the pipe rather than through the concrete slab itself.  Radon cannot be detected until the home is built and opportunity exists for radon to concentrate.  Should radon ever concentrate in the basement, connecting the plastic PVC pipe to the outside of the house instantly activates the system.  In addition to the radon mitigation system, the sump pump being utilized on the property contains a state-of-the-art emergency back-up.

Central Vacuum System
-This system, donated by Broan-NuTone, has a motor design that deep cleans far better than conventional vacuums.  Eco-friendly products are found across the board within Broan-NuTone product lines. NuTone central vacuum systems carry dirt, dust, dust mites, pet dander and other microbes away from living areas. Inherently, less powerful upright/portable vacuums propel many pollutants back into the air homeowners breathe. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) acknowledges central vacuum systems as important indoor air quality enhancements; additionally, clinical studies have proven central vacuum systems can reduce allergy symptoms by as much as 61 percent.
