Energy Efficiency

Insulation Techniques - Insulation is a major component for the ability of any home to maintain a level of energy efficiency.  The US Department of Energy (DOE) studies show that 40% of a home’s energy is lost due to air infiltration. This air infiltrates the home in the form of drafts through walls sockets, windows and doorways. The Wisconsin Trend Home™ is utilizing a closed cell spray foam in both the box sills and the ceilings, as well as cellulose in the ceilings.  Spray foam generally has a significantly higher R-value than standard fiberglass insulation, and helps to “seal” the building envelope from the exterior elements.

Tyvek® HomeWrap
- The home is using DuPont™ Tyvek® Homewrap® which helps to seal the building envelope, reducing air leakage, while allowing moisture to escape.  This helps prevent the formation of mold and mildew for a healthier, more energy-efficient home.  This helps to optimize the efficiency of the HVAC systems in the home, improving air quality and reducing energy usage simultaneously.  Additionally, this product is a recyclable material.

Advanced Framing
- For the purposes of the roof trusses, the trusses will be pre-constructed off-site, as a way to reduce the time that it will take to erect the roof structure.  This process will help to minimize the amount of time that the components of the home are exposed to the weather elements, thereby ensuring a reduction in mold spores, in addition to other harmful environmental particulates.

Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) - This home used SIPs, which are building panels used in walls, roofs, and floors for residential and light commercial buildings. The panels are typically made by sandwiching a core of rigid expanded polystyrene foam insulation between two skins of oriented strand board (OSB).  The result is a building system that is stronger than traditional stick framing, extremely energy efficient, and cost effective.   SIPs provide for an extremely healthy and energy efficient home by greatly reducing outside air infiltration which maximizes the amount of inside air to be regulated by a filtered heat recovery system versus leaking through the shell of the home.

Foundation
- A poured foundation wall helps to minimize construction time and cost.  They also allow for more flexible floor plans and, because there are not joints in a wall span, create a drier living space.  The foundation pour will be performed by Wisconsin-based Coello & Associates, while the waterproofing will be done by Waterproof Systems.   The foundation wall will be waterproofed on the exterior using Tuff-N-Dri, which spans foundation settling cracks to block potential seepage points.  This system protects the membrane, channels water to the drainage system for efficient removal, and insulates basement walls to help make the space inside more comfortable and energy-efficient.

Windows
- Careful window design encourages natural daylight throughout the home and reduces the need for artificial light. Wisconsin-based Weather-Tek will be installing Milgard windows throughout the home.  In the summer, Milgard's SunCoat Low-E keeps your home cool and comfortable by rejecting the sun's heat and damaging rays. In the winter, SunCoat Low-E helps your home stay warm and cozy by blocking heat loss to the cold weather outside. Heating and cooling cost savings of up to 13% in Wisconsin.  Not only are the windows more energy efficient, but it also helps reduce the harmful UV rays that fade your carpet and furniture—by up to 78%.

Thermal Massing
- Thermal massing is a passive design technique that delays the transfer of heath throughout the course of a day and minimizes the impact of the heating or cooling load on a building.  Heavy materials such as stone, concrete, and brick can all be used to achieve thermal massing.  Additionally, special flooring selections, provided by Wisconsin-based Nunn’s Flooring, help to both absorb and retain heat..

Solar Thermal Hot Water
- Water is primarily heated by a passive solar thermal hot water system that operates with two flat panels mounted on the roof.  This system connects to a large solar thermal storage tank that is also a high-efficiency, natural gas back up (the Phoenix) in the basement that transfers heat to the incoming cold-water line just before entering the hot water tank.  This system is a closed-loop drain back that utilizes a special water solution to protect from freezing.  This system will be monitored by an Eagle II controller.  On a daily basis, we can expect to heat approximately 100 gallons of hot water through this system.

Energy Efficient Water Heater
- The Phoenix Solar water heater is truly a revolutionary product. It is designed with an internal solar heat exchanger for a solar panel that combines with a highly efficient 97% gas fired back-up heat exchanger all in one storage tank. The water heater will transfer all the energy the sun can provide and also provide lots of hot water through the internal gas fired back-up when the sun is not shining. Designed with the most advanced technology available, with a 97% efficiency, this product will optimize efficiency and operating reliability.

Photovoltaics
- This technique, which is a solar power technology that uses solar cells or or solar photovoltaic arrays to convert light from the sun directly into electricity, is used on the home. The arrays, for this home, will be mounted on the roof line of the home, which faces nearly due south.  This orientation will help maximize the energy created through the use of the arrays.  Wisconsin-based Arch Electric, LLC has agreed to perform the installation of these arrays.

Lighting
- Light emitting diodes (LED) will be utilized for all backlighting (including under-cabinet lights), which helps to reduce the amount of energy needed to light the home.  All other lighting in the home will utilize Energy Star fixtures.  The home’s lighting schematic will be programmed for various purposes, as well as certain times of the day for when and where lighting in needed.  During the cooling season, lighting features reduce the amount of heat emitted to alleviate air conditioning demand.  During the heating season, the energy saved by using LEDs is more efficiently applied to producing heat via the HVAC system.

High Performance Bath Ventilation Fans - The Broan SmartSense Intelligent Ventilation System provides homeowners with an affordable, automatic ventilation solution that minimizes the presence of pollutants and maximizes energy savings.  Individual fans that once worked independently now work together to ensure fresh air throughout the day to create an integrated ventilation system in the home.  This fan system efficiently manages energy by continually monitoring and activating fans day and night, operating them when necessary throughout the home to distribute fresh air.  Bath fans of this sort can drastically improve indoor air quality by expunging particulates in the air to the outside, and keeping the indoor air moving.  A Broan SmartSense control is connected to each fan. One control is designated as the master and communicates wirelessly with other controls.

Passive Solar Design
- The Wisconsin Trend Home™ features a solarium on the southwest side of the home to optimize its passive solar design.  Utilizing passive solar techniques help to maximize the heat from the sun during the cold winter months.  During the warmer summer months, an overhang is used to block the rays of the sun from heating the home.

Transportation/Embodied Energy
- Nearly all of the materials utilized for the Wisconsin Trend Home™ are manufactured within a 100 mile radius of the project site.  Using locally and regionally sourced materials significantly reduces the amount of energy consumed during transportation.

Low Maintenance and Durability - Durable building products ensure that the home does not require significant maintenance, repair and/or product replacement over the life of the home.  Durability is an especially important principle for the exterior materials that endure Wisconsin’s harsh weather elements, year after year.  The exterior elements, including the roofing by Ecostar, the fiber cement board siding provided by James Hardie, and the stone façade from Halquist all come with warranties that generally surpass those typically offered in their respective industries.
